What's a Podcast? A really good definition comes from Wikipedia, the on-line FREE Web encyclopedia. Which says: Podcasting is a method of publishing audio programs via the Internet, allowing users to subscribe to a feed of new files (usuallyMP3s). You can read more details and the history of Podcasting here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcasting

How do people receive podcasts? Podcasts [or MP3s] are usually distributed over the Internet using RSS [Really Simple Syndication] or by using an audio link on a Web page that will open and begin playing in your Web browser. [Similar to the demo on this site]

What's the difference between Podcasting and Webcasting? Delivering audio content over the Web has been around practically since the inception of the Internet.  Making audio available on Websites, either as a link to a separate file, or embedded in Web pages, is often referred to as Webcasts.  Podcasts can do the same thing, except with special coding, they can also be sent directly to someone's computer, audio-ready PDA or Podcast-ready cell phone if they have "subscribed" to receive the Podcast automatically.  They can plug in their portable player to their computer, using either an iPod or other MP3 Player, and transfer the Podcast to the player so they can take it with them.   This can be done overnight, for example, making the downloaded Podcasts available anytime for playback on their portable player or their computer.

How many people can actually hear a Podcast?  Anyone who has a computer that is connected to the Internet and that plays sound can hear a Podcast.  And, anyone with a portable MP3 player can take the Podcast with them wherever they go.  According to the latest research, more than 22 million American adults of some kind of portable player.
